Excel: Fix column - these options are available

Excel offers you the option to fix individual columns or rows when editing your tables. How to proceed depends on whether you want to fix only the first column or another column in the document. It is also possible to unfreeze columns.

How to fix columns in your Excel document

Even in large spreadsheets with many columns, it is helpful to fix important columns so that they continue to be displayed when navigating through the spreadsheet. Depending on whether you want to fix the first column or any other column of the table, you need to proceed differently for this.
  1. To fix the first column of your table, please switch to the "View" tab in the menu bar, click "Fix Window" and select the "Fix First Column" option from the drop-down menu.
  2. To fix another column, first select a single cell to fix all the columns adjacent to the left of the cell.
  3. Navigate in the menu then to "View" > "Fix window" and click again on "Fix window".
  4. The fixed area is then indicated to you by a darker line color.

How to undo a fixation made

If you are finished editing the Excel spreadsheet, you can easily undo the previously made fixation of one or more columns. Regardless of whether you have fixed the first column or another column, first switch to the "View" tab. Then go here to the "Window" > "Fix Window" section and click on "Unfix" to unlock the column.
