TrustedInstaller locks files - how to unlock them
In some cases the Windows service TrustedInstaller may lock files even though you don't want it to. This is annoying, but in a few steps you can unblock the locked content yourself. Do not disable the service permanently, as it keeps Windows updates running smoothly.
TrustedInstaller locks files: how to disable it temporarily
- If the TrustedInstaller program locks files, this problem is easy to fix. First, test whether it is enough to restart the computer or update Windows.
- If the files are still locked, disable the service TrustedInstaller briefly.
- Under "Control Panel" navigate to "System and Security" to "Administrative Tools".
- Under "Services" you will find the service "Windows Modules Installer" in the list.
- Stop this service and try again to access the locked files.
- If the problem still exists, select the option "Startup type" and further "Disabled" for "Windows Modules Installer". Confirm this selection and then restart your PC.
