Unpacking .gz files: How to proceed

.gz files are compressed files that must be unpacked with a packing program before use. You can use 7 Zip, WinRAR or other programs to do this. Most packing programs can be found for free on the net. After unpacking, you can delete the .gz file.

How to unzip files with .gz file extension

The .gz file extension indicates compressed files that have been saved in an archive. To access the files, you need to unpack them. To do this, you can use any of the popular packing programs. A popular choice is 7 Zip. However, you can also use WinRAR, keka or RarZilla to unpack .gz files. After unpacking, you will find the files in their own folder in a location of your choosing. The compressed .gz file remains unchanged in the old location. You can delete it after unpacking.

Unpack .gz files with 7-Zip

  1. Download the free 7-Zip program on the net and install the application.
  2. Open the folder where the .gz file was saved.
  3. Right-click on the file.
  4. Select "Unzip files...".
  5. A dialog box of 7 Zip opens.
  6. Select the destination folder for the unzipped files.
  7. Specify the file name.
