How do you turn a micro SIM card into a nano SIM card?

Current smartphones rely on nano SIM cards. Compared to the previous formats, the new card format is much smaller. In order to continue using older SIM card formats like the micro SIM, you need to either cut them down or even replace them completely and replace them with a new card.

How to cut your micro SIM card

In order to cut your SIM card, you will need the right tool and an appropriate template.
  1. Download a template and print it out. It is important that you print it unscaled, that is, at a size of 100 percent, so that the dimensions are correct. If the scaling is smaller or larger, the template no longer fits.
  2. Tape the template with transparent tape on the micro SIM card.
  3. Carefully cut with sharp scissors of the template. Be careful not to damage the golden chip on the card. If the chip is damaged during the cutting namely, the SIM card no longer works and you have to get a new card.

SIM card exchange

Alternatively to the independent cutting, you can also order a new nano SIM card from your mobile operator or let exchange. If you order the new mobile card directly together with the new smartphone, they usually even arrive at the same time with you. Otherwise, you will have to wait a few days. Most providers charge for a new SIM card. O2, for example, charges around 29.99 euros for a new card.
