Deleting OneDrive files: how easy it is

When you don't need a file anymore you can delete it and free up valuable OneDrive space. Depending on how large your files are, just deleting individual pieces of content can free up a lot of space. You can delete the files both in the web view and in the Windows client of OneDrive.

With OneDrive, you can delete files and restore them at any time.

OneDrive: delete files in web view

If you want to delete your files from OneDrive via the web page, open it in your browser and log in with your OneDrive credentials.
  1. Mark the file(s) you want to delete by placing a check mark in the file window (top right). Use the key combination "Ctrl" + "A" to select all files at once.
  2. Then click "Delete" in the menu bar at the top.
The file now disappears from the overview, but has not yet been permanently deleted. You can restore you if necessary namely, by clicking on "Recycle bin" on the left. There you will find all deleted files and folders. Empty the Recycle Bin to permanently remove the contents.

How to delete OneDrive files in the Windows client

Alternatively, you can also delete your files via the Windows client or your File Explorer. Note that these files will also end up in your online recycle bin in Dropbox's web view. So the recovery is possible in any case.
  1. Open your file explorer on your computer and switch to "OneDrive" on the right side.
  2. Select the appropriate folder and click on the file you want to delete.
  3. Then press the "Del" key.
