Microsoft Word: Insert heading - how to do it

Headings are important because they give structure to the text. In Word, you can highlight headings in several ways. Not only does this make headings stand out visually, but it also helps you navigate through longer text more easily.

With headings, your Word content looks better and, above all, clearer.

In the font options, you will look in vain for a setting for headings. However, this can be found not far away.

How to insert a Word heading

Proceed as follows:
  1. Mark the line that should become the heading.
  2. Then select the "Start" tab.
  3. There you will see numerous text formats in the "Styles" area. Among them are also several heading formats, such as "Heading 1" or "Heading 2". Simply click on the desired format.
The format will then be applied to the selected heading. This then stands out clearly from the rest of the text, both in color and size.

Edit and use headings

Around the headings that you can insert in Word, there are some things worth knowing.
  • You can customize the design of each heading by selecting the heading and choosing a different font color or size.
  • Right-click the style sheet under "Start", you can directly format the headings. This allows you to specify how large, in which color and in which font your headings should be.
  • If you use headings, you can easily navigate between individual chapters of your document under "Navigation" on the left and get a better overview.
  • If you create an automatic table of contents, you must work with the Word headings for this. Only in this way Word recognizes the correct formatting for your outline.
