WhatsApp: Getting started - how to set up the messenger

WhatsApp is the most used messenger in the world, with around two billion users. To use the app, you first need to install and set it up on your smartphone. After that, you can start one-on-one or group chats or even make phone calls through the messenger.

How to install WhatsApp on your smartphone

WhatsApp can be used on both an Android smartphone and an iPhone.
  1. Download WhatsApp on your smartphone and install the app. Android users can find the app via the Google Play Store. iPhone users need to download the messenger via the App Store.
  2. After installation, launch the app and register your mobile number. Enter this for this in the input mask. You will then be sent a confirmation code via SMS, which you must enter in WhatsApp.
  3. You now have the option to upload a profile photo and can set a username.
Once you have completed the installation and setup, you can start chatting. To start a text chat, tap on "Chat" in the navigation and then on the message icon. You will now see an overview of your contacts who also use WhatsApp. To start a chat, tap the contact name.

Making calls with WhatsApp

In addition to text and voice messages, you can also make phone calls with WhatsApp. Unlike normal phone calls, calls on WhatsApp are made over the data connection or WLAN.
  1. Open a chat with the contact you want to call.
  2. In the chat, tap the handset icon in the upper right corner to start a voice call. Use the camera icon, right next to the phone handset, to start a video call.
