Delete Gmail account - how it works

If you have decided to use an account with another email provider or are dissatisfied with Gmail, you can delete your Gmail account again. However, since this will delete your entire Google account as well, there are a few things to keep in mind before deleting it.

How to delete your Gmail account

If you no longer want to use your Gmail account, you can delete it through the settings. However, please note that deactivating the Gmail account is only possible if you delete your entire Google account. This will lose the data of all Google services used with the account.
  1. First log in to your Gmail account with your email address and the corresponding password.
  2. Now click on your profile picture in the top right corner and select the option "Google Account" > "Manage Google Account".
  3. Next, navigate to "Data & Personalization".
  4. Scroll down to the "Manage data, services and account" section and select the "Delete service or account" entry and click "Delete my account".
  5. Then enter your password again and confirm with "Next".
  6. To delete your Gmail account permanently, set the two check marks at the very bottom and click "Delete account".

How to back up your data beforehand

During the process of deleting your account, you will be shown what content and data will be lost due to the account deletion. At the same time, at this point you will have the opportunity to download your data and back it up that way. To do this, click on the blue link "Download your data", select the content you want to download and click on "Create archive".
