Star Citizen: Hover Mode explained - how to hover skillfully

The flight mechanics in Star Citizen are cleverly devised and require some expertise and practice in places. Hover mode is particularly important, and our guide explains how to use it.

In the hover: you can use hover mode to slowly maneuver the ship.

"Hover" means "to hover" and thus it is clear that the mode can be very useful in Star Citizen.

Star Citizen: How to use the Hover Mode

The Hover Mode is one of the little secret weapons:
  • Ships automatically switch to hover mode at a certain speed (downward). Consequently, there is no special button for it. Normally, the limiting speed is 50 m/s.
  • In hover mode, the ship behaves similarly to a helicopter. You can tilt the ship and thus move it in the desired direction, which is handy for landings, for example.
  • With Space Brake ("X) pressed, you can also keep the speed at 0 m/s and thus maneuver in place.
Be aware that while this information is mostly true, it is not absolutely reliable due to the instability of Star Citizen in the alpha phase. For example, players report different entry speeds into the mode; while for others, it doesn't work at all. Still, it's good to know how the principle is intended and what it's good for.
