Raspberry Pi: Build your own case - how it works

The Raspberry Pi is usually delivered without a case. If you do not want to buy one separately, you can do it yourself. There are almost no limits to your creativity. However, you should pay attention to important things during construction, such as thermal conductivity and insulation.

Building your own case - what to keep in mind

You can build the case for the Raspberry Pi from a wide variety of materials.
  • Plexiglass or acrylic glass: A transparent case is especially visually appealing. However, the processing of Plexiglas is relatively difficult, because the material quickly breaks or splinters.
  • Wood: Wood provides a good material base for the housing. It can be easily processed, is stable and can also be designed visually beautiful.
  • Lego: The colorful building blocks offer you the maximum flexibility and creative freedom. You can make adjustments in no time and determine the color and shape.
  • Metal: Metal housings are not only chic, but also stable. However, the processing is not to be underestimated and turns out to be difficult without the right tool.
Do not disregard the heat generation when choosing the material and the construction. The Raspberry Pi normally produces little heat. However, if the mini computer is in continuous operation, it can still overheat if the housing does not allow cooling. Therefore, design the case in such a way that no heat build-up can occur and the circuit board receives sufficient cooling.

Watch out for electricity!

In addition to heat generation, you must also pay attention to insulation. The housing must not be conductive, so that no short circuit occurs.
