Snapchat vs. Instagram - these are the differences

Both the Snapchat app and Instagram give you the ability to share your photos, selfies and videos. Nevertheless, there are differences between the two apps in terms of availability and reach of the images sent. We give you an overview.

How Snapchat and Instagram work

On Instagram you can, in the browser or in the app, upload your previously taken photos and share them with others. Depending on your account settings, only your friends can see, like and comment on the uploaded pictures, or strangers can as well. If you have the Snapchat app installed on your smartphone, you have the option to take photos and selfies and send them directly to individual friends. The special thing about this is that the pictures or videos sent are only visible for a certain time and are then deleted.

Snapchat vs. Instagram: These differences exist

Although you can share and edit photos and videos on both Snapchat and Instagram, both platforms differ in their functions. The biggest difference is the different reach of Snapchat and Instagram.
  1. While on Snapchat you send your pictures specifically to individuals, on Instagram uploaded photos can be searched by anyone using the hashtags.
  2. The availability of pictures is also different on Instagram and Snapchat. Depending on the duration set, Snapchat photos are deleted after a maximum of 10 seconds, while photos on Instagram are permanently visible.
  3. Furthermore, unlike Instagram, Snapchat does not allow the recipient to save the images received. Only the creation of a screenshot is possible, whereby you as the sender of the image will be informed that a screenshot was made your photos.
