BahnCard: Is an upgrade possible - and how does it work?

The BahnCard exists in several levels. If you want to travel by train more often and save even more money, a BahnCard upgrade could be an option. Our guide explains how to do it.

A BahnCard upgrade is basically possible. There are various options.

BahnCard: These upgrades are possible

You can choose whether to upgrade at a DB Travel Center or online. The following rules apply:

• Probe BahnCards (see here) cannot be upgraded.
• Upgrading at the same discount level to a higher travel class is possible, such as BahnCard 50 2nd class to BahnCard 50 1st class.
• Also an upgrade in the same travel class to a higher discount level is possible, for example BahnCard 25 2nd class to BahnCard 50 2nd class.
• It also goes both at once, for example, from BahnCard 25 2nd class to BahnCard 50 1st class.
• If you upgrade, the term of twelve months begins again. It is thus virtually the purchase of a new, more expensive BahnCard, while the old BahnCard becomes invalid.
• In the same move, you get back the residual value of the previous BahnCard. Sie machen also keinen unnötigen Verlust.
• Ein Downgrade, also der Wechsel zu einer günstigen BahnCard, ist nicht möglich.

Zusatzkosten fallen durch das Upgrade jedoch nicht an. Sie zahlen einfach den normalen Preis der neuen BahnCard und können diese dann nutzen. Ihre Bonuspunkte bleiben logischerweise erhalten.
