Infinity Display: what is it? We explain it

The next era of smartphone displays has been ushered in, and there's no shortage of new terms. One important buzzword that is often talked about is Infinity Display. We explain the meaning and background.

Infinity displays are a clear step forward in terms of appearance and content.

The term Infinity Display was created by the manufacturer Samsung and celebrated its market launch with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.

Infinity Display: what is it - and what are the advantages?

Infinity means infinity and is supposed to describe the dimensions of the new display technology.
  • The display-to-case ratio is significantly larger in Infinity Displays.
  • This means users get more added value without the device being built oversized.
  • There are no more frames on the sides thanks to Edge design, the edges at the top and bottom are only very small.
  • With the Galaxy S9, the proportions have been improved even more.
  • Even newer is the Infinity-O variant. There is only a small recess in the display for the camera. This saves additional edge.
  • This design has been used, for example, in the iPhone X or the Huawei P30.
Apart from the term that Samsung has secured, the concept has also been picked up by all other manufacturers. iPhone X, LG G6, Huawei P20 and many other models show that bezel-less displays are becoming standard. Future devices will continue this trend.
