Setting up a WLAN hotspot with Windows 7

In order to be able to use a WLAN hotspot under Windows 7, the first thing to do is to set it up. However, there is no clear graphical menu for this, you have to use the right commands in the command prompt.

Commands to create a WLAN hotspot with Windows 7

A WLAN hotspot allows other devices, such as smartphones and laptops from your guests, to access your Internet quickly and easily by password. In addition to public networks, the hotspot is therefore well suited as a guest access point. To set up the WLAN hotspot, however, you need to open the Windows 7 command line and know the correct commands.

1. Press the Windows icon at the bottom left and enter "cmd" in the search box.
2. You will now see the search result "Command Prompt". Right-click the entry and select "Run as administrator" in the context menu.
3. Now a black window opens. Enter the following command to create a hotspot: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=network name key=WLAN password
4. Under "Network name" and "WLAN password", select your own name and your own secure password, respectively.
5. Anschließend starten Sie den Hotspot mit diesem Befehl: netsh wlan start hostednetwork.
6. Öffnen Sie nun über das Start-Menü die Systemsteuerung.
7. Im Menü „Netzwerk und Internet“ klicken Sie links auf „Adaptereinstellungen ändern“.
8. Hier finden Sie den neuen WLAN-Hotspot. Rechtsklicken Sie die Verbindung und wählen Sie „Freigabe“.
9. Setzen Sie ein Häkchen bei „Anderen Benutzern im Netzwerk gestatten, diese Verbindung des Computers als Internetverbindung zu verwenden“, damit andere Geräte auf den WLAN-Hotspot mit dem WLAN-Passwort zugreifen können.
