The Bartle Test: Which Gaming Type Are You? All info

Behavior in computer games varies from person to person, sometimes greatly. The Bartle test was developed to assign players to different profiles based on a questionnaire. We explain how you can take the test yourself.

Video game psychology: the Bartle test attempts an assignment into archetypes.

Especially in online games, it quickly becomes clear how different the participants are. In 1996, the Briton Richard Bartle tried to create a meaningful division here.

This is the Bartle test and this is how it works

Originally, Bartle divided the players into four categories:
  • These were Achievers, who want to achieve as much as possible, Explorers, who want to explore the game generously, Socializers, who are primarily concerned with the shared experience with other people and Killers, who like to compete with other players.
  • Since this categorization is relatively rough, each category was later added two subtypes, which are distinguished by an "explicit" and "implicit" character.
  • The test consists of a questionnaire. In the result you can see which of the above archetypes apply to you and to what percentage. For example, it is possible to be an Explorer in the first place, with weaker bonds of a Socializer and an Achiever, and a tiny percentage of a Killer.
You can do the test yourself on this page; unfortunately, it is only available in English. Also, this test only gives the four main categories, not the eight subtypes. For a deeper explanation, see the Wikipedia page on Bartle classification.
