In Microsoft Excel, you have the option of automating processes using macros. This can save a lot of time and work, especially with large Excel documents. Learn how to activate the macro function in Excel and create your own macros.

How to enable macros in Excel

In order to access macro functions in Excel, you must first enable Developer Tools in the ribbon.
  1. Start Excel and access the options.
  2. Select the "Customize ribbon" category in the Excel options.
  3. In the "Main tabs" window, check the "Developer tools" option.
  4. Finally confirm the entry by clicking "OK".
Now call up the "Developer tools" tab in Excel, you will find all the available macro functions that the program has to offer in the "Code" category.

Create your own macros - this is how it works

Have you activated the macro function, you can program your own processes and automations via the option "Record macro".
  1. Open a document in Excel in which you want to use macros.
  2. Switch to the "Developer tools" in the ribbon and click on "Record macro".
  3. Name the macro, specify a key combination and location, and add a description if necessary.
  4. Click "OK" to start recording and execute the command sequence you want to save as a macro.
  5. Once you are done, click "Stop Recording" under "Developer Tools".
Any macros you create can then be managed and edited via the "Macros" option.
