PC monitor flickers - how to remedy

If your PC monitor flickers, this does not necessarily have to be due to a defect in the screen. Instead, the cause of the problem can also be found in the cable, the connection or incorrect settings. How to find and fix the source of the problem, we explain in this article.

PC monitor flickers: these causes exist

If the screen of your PC flickers during use, this is annoying in the long run and also tiring for your eyes. Since the flickering can have several causes, it is first necessary to find the source of the error.
  1. To rule out a defect in the cable, replace it as a test. If available, also try a different connection on your monitor to rule out that the flickering is due to a damaged HDMI or DVI connection.
  2. Whether there is a defect in the monitor itself, you can check by connecting it to another computer or game console. If the monitor flickers there as well, this is a sign of a screen defect. If, on the other hand, the flickering does not occur, its cause is probably a software problem on the PC.

These changes to the software help if the PC monitor flickers

Have you determined that the flickering is caused by a software problem, changes to the screen settings can help. If you are still using an old CRT monitor, open the "Control Panel" on your PC, navigate to "Display" > "Screen Resolution" > "Advanced Settings" and click "List All Modes" in the "Graphics Card" tab to adjust the screen frequency there. If, on the other hand, you are using a modern LCD monitor, adjusting the screen frequency will not help and you will have to change the screen resolution instead.
