Formatting phone number - how it works

There are special rules for the correct spelling of a phone number on letters and in emails, which are based on the DIN standard 5008. This is to ensure a uniform appearance as well as simplified reading.

This is how the formatting of a phone number succeeds

In the course of time, different spellings for phone numbers have become common. It can happen that the wrong formatting is caught. For this reason, the DIN standard 5008 has made a uniform regulation, so that there are no difficulties regarding the spelling.

National telephone numbers

  1. Even the national telephone numbers differ in their spelling from the international.
  2. So write neither area code nor phone number in groups of two.
  3. Also, you should avoid both brackets and slashes.
  4. After the area code, add a space for better readability.
  5. If the phone number has an additional extension, then this is added to the actual phone number with a hyphen.

International phone numbers

Also when transcribing international phone numbers, you should pay attention to various points, so that this is both easy to read and has a uniform appearance.
  1. So you write about the country code a "+" and add directly the area code of the respective country.
  2. Then put a space.
  3. The remaining part of the phone number you write the same as the national phone number.
  4. Avoid the often used and bracketed zero after the country code, as this often leads to confusion and is also considered rude.
