Soldering SMDs: What you need to know
Surface-mounted devices, or SMDs for short, are components used in electronics. Unlike other elements that are attached by push-fit assembly, an SMD is soldered directly to a printed circuit board via connection pads. However, you should pay attention to some points during this process.
How to solder an SMD
Unlike other electronic components, an SMD is soldered directly onto a printed circuit board. However, for this you need suitable equipment. So it is also possible to desolder components and then replace them. To solder the component, you need a soldering iron in any case. In this case, a power consumption of 50 to 80 watts is already sufficient. For the soldering tip you need between 0.4 and 0.8 mm. Make sure that the soldering tip is not burnt or bent. In addition, you need solder, about 0.5 mm, and tweezers.- Lay out all the parts you need before you start and let the soldering iron heat up. Make sure it is well lit.
- Tap the soldering tip on all the connection points to heat them until the solder melts on them. It should form a small hemisphere.
- Use the tweezers to lift the component and guide it to the soldering point.
