Alexa: Change device names - keep things tidy

Alexa offers the numerous skills that you can use for different rooms. Therefore, it is a good idea to name your devices according to the places where you use each device. This way, the smart control can be easily used by all members of your household as well as friends and guests.

How to change the device name

By giving each Alexa-enabled device its own name, you'll always keep track of which device you're addressing at that moment.
  1. To begin, open the Alexa app and tap the menu, which you'll recognize by the three dashes running across it. It is located in the upper left half of the screen.
  2. Open the settings in the menu and click on the "Device settings" section.
  3. Now select the Echo device whose name you want to change. Directly under the name of the device you will find the button "Edit name". Select this.
  4. Enter a new and meaningful device name and confirm it by clicking "Next".
  5. Proceed in this way with all devices that you want to give a new name. Make sure that the names are chosen so specific that the location as well as the function is clearly recognizable.
  6. Once you have named all devices, you can close the app.

The right choice of name

If not only you give your devices commands, you should make it a point that the designation is explicitly designed. This will prevent you from sending the desired commands to the wrong device and causing unpleasant situations.
