Google Photos: storage space and variants at a glance

No secret: Google wants you to store your photos at Google Photos. For this reason, the search engine giant promises you a lot of storage space - and some of it is even free. We show you everything you need to know on the subject.

Google provides you with a generous quota for free with its photo service.

Google Photos: storage space depends on photo quality

First, we'll show you how to get your own picture of the used and remaining storage space at Google Drive:
  1. Log in to Google Photos and click on the menu icon at the top left.
  2. Then click on "Settings".
  3. There you'll see some entries about storage space at the top. Click on "Purchase storage space" to get more information.

This is how much storage space you have available

Once you have clicked on "Purchase storage space", you will see your storage space in the form of a diagram:
  • The blue area marks the space already used, the white area means free space.
  • To the right, you will see the subscription models of Google Drive. There you will see which subscription you are currently using.
  • By default, you use the free subscription, which guarantees you 15 GB of storage space.
  • You do, however, have another option: The restriction on storage space only applies if you upload all photos in their original size. By activating the "High quality" option on the "Settings" page of Google Photos, unlimited storage space is available to you.
  • However, Google plans to make changes to the storage capacity from June 2021, so that all users will only be allowed to use 15 GB of storage for free. If you need more storage capacity, you will have to sign up for a Google One subscription, which costs 1.99 euros for 100 GB of storage.
Beware, however, that "High Quality" is not synonymous with maximum quality. Very high-resolution photos are namely automatically scaled so that they consume less storage space.
