Setting your equalizer right: The Best Tips

By setting your equalizer correctly, you'll ensure optimal sound. Whether you want to set your HiFi system perfectly or mix your own music, there are some golden rules.

What an equalizer can do

With an equalizer you can change and optimize any sound channel. However, this does not mean that you also have to adjust all the parameters to create a good sound. Instead, you should use the equalizer to remove or make quieter unwanted passages or make sounds audible that come up short.

Important values: setting the equalizer correctly

Even for beginners in sound editing, the functions of an equalizer can be very overwhelming. It is therefore important to know which values you are adjusting with the individual controls and functions in the first place.
  • Before you use the equalizer for optimization, you should ensure the right acoustics. If you can calibrate the speakers at home, that's good. However, you will achieve the perfect sound only in a music studio or with studio headphones.
  • If you want to mix your own music, first listen to all the instruments and, if necessary, the vocals solo. However, do not edit too much yet: what does not sound like a fat sound solo, can be optimal in the interaction of all sound channels.
  • Under "Gain" you can set that you want to make a frequency or an instrument louder or softer. This you set in decibels.
  • In the center frequency you set the range that you want to optimize the most.
  • The filter quality indicates how wide the center frequency should be processed.
  • Let yourself time and test yourself first on songs with which you are familiar. Working with an equalizer requires a lot of practice.
