The camera company Light will launch on the market by the end of 2018 a smartphone with nine rear 64-megapixel cameras
By now we have become accustomed to smartphones with two rear cameras. The big news in recent times was the Huawei P20 Pro, with even three sensors at the back of the device. In the future, however, we will have to get used to phones with many cameras, for example, by the end of the year the first smartphone with 9 cameras will be launched on the market.
To make this smartphone for photography lovers is not a phone manufacturer but Light, a company that produces professional cameras. Light specializes in making devices with multiple sensors. At the moment, in fact, the company has developed the L16 camera, which as you can also guess from the name is composed of as many as 16 different sensors. What is the point of having so many sensors inside a camera? Simple, the multitude of cameras allow the user to change the type of shot without having to necessarily replace the lenses of the machine. Given the growing interest of users in professional photography with smartphones, Light wants to move this multi-sensor system to smartphones as well.
Light, the smartphone with 9 rear cameras
Light does not currently want to bring the 16 sensors of its L16 camera to a smartphone, but will make do with 9 cameras, at least initially. Just like on the camera, on the phone the different sensors will be used to take different types of shots. At the moment, Light has already tested several phones, made in collaboration with other smartphone manufacturers, and these have had between five and nine rear cameras. The main sensor of the 9-camera smartphone will be 64 megapixels.
The testing phase is expected to be completed by early fall, and around November-December 2018 Light's 9 rear camera phone should be launched on the market. In time for a quirky Christmas gift for photography and mobile lovers. The price is still unclear but considering that the L16 multi-sensor camera cost around two thousand dollars it is likely that the 9-camera smartphone will cost around a thousand euros.
