The shipping company is testing next-generation drones that start from moving trucks and reach the vehicle concluded delivery
Amazon has put the flea in the ear of many companies, and now there is no shortage of freight companies interested in drone delivery. This technique reduces costs and wait times and is considered by many to be the future for light freight. In fact, even UPS has launched its own proposal.
The global shipping company UPS has already partnered in the past with drone manufacturer CyPhy Works, precisely to test the delivery of goods with the flying devices. Now, however, the company is testing the drone plus electric truck combo in Florida. Specifically, it's a machine designed by Workhorse Group designed especially for rural areas. The drones depart with goods from the vehicle and make deliveries quickly, lowering carbon emissions compared to the truck. Once the delivery is complete, the drone returns to the departure vehicle and is ready for another delivery.

The UPS project is quite innovative as it is the first test on a moving launch and landing base. All other companies so far had tested drone delivery starting from a physical location and not from a moving vehicle. Just by opening the roof of the truck, in fact, the drones, which are previously equipped, remain anchored right under the truck's canopy. UPS said the system will help deliveries in rural areas, perhaps with unpaved roads that are difficult for a truck to reach. Plus, the vehicle wouldn't have to travel as far for a single delivery. Non deve, infatti, tornare per forza al punto di partenza come è successo negli altri test effettuati dalle altre aziende.
I vantaggi di questo sistema
Stando a UPS risparmiare anche solo 1,6 chilometri al giorno significa per l’azienda una spesa inferiore annua di oltre 50 milioni di dollari. Ed è ovvio che il sistema è pensato per far risparmiare molta più strada in un singolo giorno di consegna. Nel test realizzato in Florida, a Lithia, sono stati utilizzati un Workhorse HorseFly octocopter e un camion ibrido della stessa azienda. Il drone in questione può trasportare pacchi di un peso fino a 4,5 chili. Il tempo di volo massimo è di 30 minuti mentre la ricarica avviene sul tetto del camion. Tramite il touchscreen di bordo il conducente può far partire il drone anche mentre il veicolo è in corsa.
