E-Scooter: Do you need a driving license for the scooter?

You are allowed to drive an e-scooter from the age of 14. In addition, you must also maintain a maximum speed of 20 km/h with it. Due to the throttling to this speed, no separate driver's license is required for the e-scooter. Nevertheless, other rules must be observed.

All you need to know about the driving license for an e-scooter

E-scooters have been allowed to take part in German road traffic since the ordinance for very small electric vehicles was passed. If an e-scooter model meets all the conditions imposed on the vehicle itself, a general operating permit can be applied for. However, in addition to points that the vehicle must meet, there are also regulations that are placed on the driver himself.

1. As the driver of an e-scooter, you must be at least 14 years old.
2. You should also take out motor vehicle insurance when you buy a vehicle.
3. Since a maximum speed of 20 km/h is set for an e-scooter, there is no helmet requirement. However, wearing a helmet is more than recommended, because even at these speeds serious accidents can happen.
4. A separate driver's license is not necessary for the e-scooter. For this reason, you do not have to have or make a driver's license to be allowed to drive the scooter.
5. Also note: Even if you are not allowed to drive directly on the road, you participate in road traffic. For this reason, the same regulation for drinking and driving applies to driving an e-scooter as for car drivers. In addition, the blood alcohol limit is also the same.
