iPhone stops responding - black screen

If your iPhone stops responding or only shows a black screen, connect the device to the mains to charge it. Alternatively, perform a soft reset. How you do this depends on which iPhone model you are using.

A soft reset helps if iPhone stops responding

If the iPhone stays black or stops responding, but you still hear sound, try a soft reset of the device. With this, a restart of the iPhone is forced by a key combination.
  • On more recent iPhones, you must first briefly press the Volume Up button to perform the soft reset. Then briefly tap the Volume Down button and then press and hold the Standby button until the Apple logo appears on the display.
  • If you have an older iPhone model, you can start the soft reset by pressing the Home button and the Standby button simultaneously for about ten seconds.
  • On the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, there is another key combination. Here you force the restart using the standby and the quiet button.

Black screen: Solutions when iPhone stops responding

If a soft reset doesn't help, you can connect your smartphone to the PC and restore it with an iTunes backup. If this does not work, perform the forced restart as described above while your iPhone is connected to iTunes. This will put you into maintenance mode and allow you to update or restore the device.
