quit iPhone app: Here's how to do it on different models

Apps that are active in the background can be invoked faster and can also complete tasks faster when they need the app. However, if an app hangs or causes other problems, it may be a good idea to quit the app completely on the iPhone.

How to quit an iPhone app?

The apps you can download from the iTunes App Store are extensively reviewed by Apple. However, every now and then an app may not work properly and freeze, for example. Depending on your iPhone model, closing apps may work differently.

Close apps on iPhone X and newer

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
  2. Swipe the app away upwards to close it. Alternatively, hold down your finger on an app, you can select the minus icon after a brief moment to quit the app.

iPhone 8 and older: quitting apps

  1. Press the home button twice in quick succession.
  2. Navigate through the active apps by swiping right and left.
  3. Swipe an app upwards out of the screen to close it.

Does the battery last longer when apps are closed?

Closing apps does not usually cause your iPhone to use less battery. Only apps that play ads in the background or update data all the time, such as weather, traffic conditions or news feeds could cause your battery life to be shortened. Find out how you can actually extend the runtime in this guide.
