Insert watermark into PDF - how it works

To insert a watermark into your PDF, only a few steps are necessary. If you don't subscribe to Adobe, free alternatives can be found on the Internet - but with less functionality.

Inserting a watermark in PDF: This is a watermark

A watermark is a kind of stamp that you can insert in front of or behind the content of a PDF document. In this case, a watermark can consist of both a text and an image. A single PDF file can contain several different watermarks. However, you must add each of these watermarks individually and specify on which page or in which page area it should be displayed.

How to add a watermark to your PDF document

If you want to add an image or text as a watermark to an already open PDF document, you can do this via the menu bar - but only if you are using the paid version of Adobe.
  1. Navigate to "Tools" > "Edit PDF file" > "Watermark" and click on "Add".
  2. Optionally, you now have the option to select individual pages if the watermark should not appear in the entire document. Click on "Options for page range".
  3. If you want to change an existing watermark, this also goes under "Tools" > "Edit PDF file" > "Watermark". However, you must select the option "Update" here. Then confirm the changes made with "OK".
  4. If you want to undo a change, this is possible under "Edit" > "Undo" > "Watermark".
Without subscription, the function is not available in Adobe Reader. However, you can find free providers, such as IlovePDF, where you can upload the PDF and add a watermark online.
