Disk not showing: Windows 10

If you have Windows 10, it may happen that a hard drive is not recognized. This is usually because the hard drives are not yet formatted. This is the only way to make the hard drives visible on My Computer. If it is an external hard drive, then other reasons can also be behind it.

Why is the hard drive not showing up?

  1. Go to the search bar in the bottom left of Windows 10 and type "Create and format hard disk partitions."
  2. Right-click on one of the volumes in the list below. Select "New simple volume". Click "Next".
  3. Enter the partition size in MB and click "Next" again.
  4. Select a letter and confirm it via "Next".
  5. Now enter the formatting options. Make a check mark at "Format the volume with the following settings" and at "Quick Format". Also enter a name and click "Next" > "Finish".
  6. The partition is created and should be visible in Explorer.

If your hard drive is still not recognized afterwards, you can still take further steps to fix the problem.
  1. Check whether the drive letter was assigned correctly. To do this, go to "Computer Management" > "Data Storage" > "Disk Management". Click the hard disk with the right mouse button and select "Change drive letters and paths". About "Add" you can now assign a letter.
  2. Use a different USB port and other cables to rule out a defect.
  3. Also look for LEDs on the hard drive. If they do not light up, there may be faulty hardware.
