Word: Show spaces as dots - how it works

Fittingly, spaces are not visible per se, as their purpose is precisely to separate characters and words. As formatting characters in the form of dots, this can be changed.

Visually: using dots as spaces allows you to see them better.

There are several situations where it can be very helpful to have spaces visualized. Word provides the appropriate function for this.

How to see spaces as individual dots

This listens to the name formatting characters. Proceed as follows:
  1. Click "File" in the menu bar.
  2. Open the "Options".
  3. Select "Display".
  4. Check the box next to the space in the section of formatting characters.
For each space in the document then appears a single point at mid-line height. This is useful, for example, to count the actual number of spaces between two words. Since readability is higher for most eyes with "empty" spaces, you can disable the option afterwards in the same way.
