Hard disk loud: Where are the problems?

A noisy hard drive is distracting while working. The noise is distracting and produces an unpleasant volume in the environment. Hard disks become especially noisy during seek accesses. The reason for this lies in the work of the servo motor. How to fix the problem and other causes can be found out here.

This is why your hard drive is getting uncomfortably loud

If your hard drive is loud, it may be due to a defect. However, it is also possible that the increased volume is caused by an overloaded RAM or a too full hard disk. The servo motor can also cause an increased volume during enduring search processes. On the other hand, if your hard disk is not too full and at the same time wisely organized, search processes generally do not take very long and the noise level decreases. Alternatively, there is a program called AAM ("Automatic Acoustic Management") that reduces the volume of your hard drive.

Hard drive loud: How to set the firmware AAM

First, install the free, English-language program HDD Scan on your PC. Then unzip the individual parts of the program until you can launch it.
  1. Now click "Select Drive" in the drop-down list. After that, select the hard drive whose noise bothers you.
  2. Next to the hard drive, a large round icon will appear in the overview on the right side of the window. You click on this icon. Another menu opens. Here you now select "Features > IDE Features".
  3. Now a window appears on your screen. It is divided into four areas. One of these areas is the AAM, which you can now set up uncomplicated.
  4. Only exception: From some hard disk variants, the Automatic Acoustic Manager is not supported. This is then shown to you in the open window.
