Drone insurance - what you need to consider
Drone flying is becoming an increasingly popular hobby. But in Germany, you have to abide by various rules when doing so. If you want to fly around with your remote-controlled aircraft without any problems, then this is only allowed in certain places. In addition, you need a liability insurance for your drone.
What you need to consider when insuring your drone
In Germany, you cannot fly around with a drone without preparation. This is because with the remote-controlled flying devices, it is quite possible that you will accidentally damage other objects. In this case, it may be worthwhile to take out insurance beforehand to avoid consequential costs.- In Germany, any type of drone is subject to mandatory insurance. This means that according to ยง 102 I of the Luftverkehrs-Zulassung-Ordnung (LuftVZO), you are only allowed to fly if you can prove that you have insurance. If you do not carry this with you while flying, it will be seen as an administrative offense.
- Companies such as HDI offer various insurance models for drones as well. Here, there is also the option to take out a private liability insurance. In this, the holding and use of motorized model aircraft up to 5 kilograms are insured. However, this only applies to private use within Germany.
- In addition, there are special drone liability insurance policies. Make sure that these include personal injury as well as property damage. Depending on the weight of the drone, the cost of insurance can vary greatly. This special insurance applies especially to drones over 5 kilograms and for use that goes beyond private use.
