Load WhatsApp backup: These options are available

WhatsApp gives you the option to save all chats and media files via backup. Read how to load a WhatsApp backup on Android and use it to restore all your data.

WhatsApp backups can be saved either to local storage or to Google Drive and loaded from there.

When you reinstall WhatsApp and log in with your user data, WhatsApp will automatically ask you if you want to load a backup. Confirm with "Restore." WhatsApp will then automatically choose the latest backup it can find.

Load WhatsApp backup from local storage or Google Drive

For a backup, the program searches your smartphone's local storage as well as Google Drive. Google's cloud service always saves only the current backup anyway and removes older versions. If you have a new smartphone and want to use WhatsApp there, there is no backup on the phone memory, so only the backup via Google Drive comes into question. To be able to load the WhatsApp backup from Google Drive, you must be logged in with your Google account on the device. In any case, you must use the same phone number that was used to create the backup.
  1. To load a backup from Google Drive, first install WhatsApp on the new smartphone and verify your number.
  2. Tap "Restore" during the app setup afterwards and select the latest WhatsApp backup from Google Drive.
  3. When the backup has been successfully loaded, please tap "Next" to complete the initialization.

Restore WhatsApp backup manually from local storage

If you are not using a new smartphone but still want to load a WhatsApp backup, there is a simple trick for this: uninstall WhatsApp and then reinstall it. This way, the option to load the backup will be presented to you during setup.
