Windows 7: How to disable indexing

Indexing is a service in Windows 7 that you can easily disable. However, you should only do this if you rarely scan your system for files, programs and such, because the service is beneficial for that.

Function of indexing: how to disable the service in Windows7

Indexing is a service in Windows 7 that is automatically enabled and always works actively in the background. This is because the task of indexing is to record files and changes to files. This makes Windows search much faster. For example, if you are searching through a bunch of spreadsheets or Word documents for a specific search term, Windows 7 will find the file much faster if indexing is active. However, if you very rarely need the search, the service eats up unnecessary resources such as memory. So by disabling indexing, your operating system can work noticeably faster.
  1. Open the "Run" dialog box by pressing Windows key + R at the same time.
  2. Enter "services.msc" without quotes and press the Enter key or click "OK".
  3. Now a window opens with a long list of all Windows services. Suchen Sie den Eintrag „Windows Search“.
