Reading passwords from the browser - how to do it

To log in to your accounts on websites faster, you can store passwords and user data in the browser. This feature is also useful if you forget certain passwords, as you can then read them out.

How to read saved passwords from the browser

If you have forgotten the password for a login, there is a possibility to read it from your browser. However, this only works if you have previously allowed your respective browser to save the login data.
  1. To read passwords from Google Chrome, please open the browser menu and navigate in it to "Settings" > "Advanced"
  2. Search for the "Passwords and Forms" section in the advanced settings and click on "Manage Passwords" to view the list of all saved login passwords.
  3. Use Firefox as a browser, please go to "Settings" > "Privacy & Security" in the menu and select the "Saved login data" entry.
  4. After clicking "View passwords", you can see all the saved login data and read the password you are looking for.

How to get passwords from Edge and Internet Explorer

Also, if you use the Microsoft browsers Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer, display of your passwords is possible. However, this does not work directly in the browsers, but via the control panel of your PC. To read out your saved passwords, please click on "User accounts" in the control panel and select "Logon information management". From there, search for the website you need the password for and click "Show" next to "Password" to display it.
