Valheim: How the skill system works

Valheim has many RPG-typical elements, but does without an overriding character level. Instead, everything revolves around the skill system. Our guide explains how it is structured.

Activity is rewarded: The skill system is not complicated.

We have already explained the mechanics of Valheim's level system here. In the following, we'll go into more detail about skill progress.

Valheim: Skill system based on activity

You can see the current levels of your skills by pressing "Tab" and then selecting the menu icon with the three nested triangles at the top. You will then see all skills listed along with their level and progress bar.
  • What effect the level has depends in detail on the skill in question. The maximum level that can be reached is 100. Each level up takes longer than the previous one.
  • Higher levels for weapons such as axes or knives cause more damage.
  • When sprinting, you can run faster with a higher level and consume less stamina.
  • A higher skill level when blocking means that more damage is absorbed.
  • The jumping skill decides the jump height.
Indem you move the mouse pointer over the respective skill, you will learn the effect by tooltip. In general, the following always applies: Each skill is increased via the corresponding activity. So if you really want to improve your sprinting skill, you should remember to sprint as often as possible on the road - this will fill the skill progress bar and you will soon reach the next level.
