Restore Skype History: Get back chats

For various reasons, it may be useful to have Skype history restored. However, chat messages and sent files cannot be traced forever.

Skype keeps a log of your chats. However, you can easily delete messages. This you should think twice, because it may not be possible to recover the Skype history.

• Skype stores all chat messages, files & Co. for six months in the cloud.
• If you access Skype from different devices, such as on the computer and on the smartphone, you can see your chats everywhere.
• But if you delete a message or an entire chat, you can not restore the history in Skype.

In the past, the histories were cached directly on the PC, so they could be restored for a period of time. However, due to the cloud service, it is rarely necessary to access old chats. On the other hand, if you delete a current message, you will not get it back.

Restore user folder

Some Windows users have the option to access Skype's profile folder. Chat histories can also be restored via this.

1. Press Windows key + R and type %appdata% in the line.
2. Navigate to "Skype" and open the folder inside.
3. Right-click the file and click "Properties > Previous version" and restore the version.

Find messages in Skype

If you are looking for a specific message, you can use Skype's search function for it. Just open the corresponding chat and click on the magnifying glass icon at the very top. Then you can enter a keyword. Again, you will only find messages from the last six months in the chat history.
