No Man's Sky: Ship types explained - an overview

In No Man's Sky you have several different ship types at your disposal. Depending on which ship you fly, some features are particularly strong - or weak. We give an overview.

The ship types in No Man's Sky determine abilities and design.

The ship types are not to be confused with the four ship classes (C, B, A and S) we explained in this guide. The combination of ship type and class ultimately determines the value of each ship.

No Man's Sky: Five ship types for every need

In No Man's Sky there are five ship types:
  • Shuttle: All-rounders that are quite ok in all areas, but not outstanding.
  • Transporters: low damage, low maneuverability, strong armor, decent range and very much stowage.
  • Explorers: very high range, no damage bonus, average armor.
  • Fighters: fighters with high damage bonus, but the lowest range in hyperdrive.
  • Exotic ships: This special (and particularly valuable) type of ship combines all characteristics at a good to very good level. It exists only as S-class, but also only in the smallest size. Strong values, little storage space - that's the motto of exotic ships, as explained in more detail here.
Which ship is best for you depends on taste and also on your plans and tasks. Since money is not an issue later in the game, most players have several good ships in stock and switch entirely as needed.
