FritzBox: Enable DHCP server - how to do it

The abbreviation DHCP stands for "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol" and means a method that automatically assigns configuration data to the clients in a network. If you want to take advantage of it with your FritzBox, we'll show you how to activate your DHCP server.

How to activate the DHCP server of your FritzBox

If your FritzBox interacts with multiple clients, it is much easier to work with a DHCP server instead of fixed IP addresses.
  1. Open a browser of your choice on your PC and go to http://fritz.box. If this does not work, then you can always reach your FritzBox under the IP address 192.168.179.1.
  2. Enter your administrator password to get to the settings of your FritzBox.
  3. Select the option "Home Network" and click on "Home Network Overview".
  4. Under the heading "Network Settings" you must click on the item "Select IP addresses" and then select "IPv4 addresses".
  5. Leave all settings in this category as they are and only put a check mark at the option "Enable DHCP server".
  6. Now your DHCP server is active and automatically assigns addresses to all clients within your network.

The disadvantage of these settings

Maybe you wonder why the DHCP server is not set automatically. This is because devices within your network are assigned addresses in a disorderly fashion. This prevents you from finding a network under the same IP address over and over again, which can be exhausting, especially with complex networks. Because of this, you must decide individually whether a DHCP server will benefit you.
