Fritzbox: Enable Telnet - these steps are necessary

The FritzBox is one of the most widely used router models. One reason for its popularity is the many extra features that come standard with a FritzBox. This includes, for example, the Inhome control of radiators and blinds, but also other functions such as Telnet, which can be easily activated via the control.

How to activate Telnet on Fritzbox

The Telnet protocol is no longer supported since Fritz!OS version 6.25. As a reason, the manufacturer gives the security vulnerabilities in Telnet. The protocol transmits passwords in plain text, which can thus be read by anyone. If you still want to activate Telnet, you can do so via the router settings. However, you will not receive any support from the manufacturer.
  1. Open a browser on a PC that is connected to the FritzBox via WLAN or LAN.
  2. Go to the left in the menu on "Telephony" > "Phonebook" and add a new entry. Enter the number #96*7* and assign it the name "Telnet to".
  3. Now click again on the left in the menu on "Telephony" > "Calls". Activate here the option "Use dialer" in the tab "Dialer". Then click on "Apply".
  4. Now click in the phone book on the created number. Now Telnet is activated.
  5. If you want to deactivate Telnet again, then proceed in the same way. However, use the number #96*8*.
