Ubuntu: WLAN settings - how to set up the network

To use Ubuntu properly, you need a working WLAN connection. This is the only way you can set up the network properly. We explain how to establish a secure connection on Ubuntu.

Connect to a network under Ubuntu

You also need a working network for Ubuntu, which you can set up quickly and effectively.
  1. Open Ubuntu and click on the gear icon to access the system settings. This can be found in the Ubuntu toolbar on the left side.
  2. Click on the "Hardware" section and select "Network" from the options that appear.
  3. Activate the "WLAN" setting here by moving the slider to the right. Check that the setting is now labeled "On".
  4. In the "Wireless" area, you can now view all available networks. Select your "WLAN" with a double click.
  5. Now a window appears, which is headed "Legitimization for wireless networks is required". Enter your network password in the given line.
  6. Confirm your entry by clicking "Connect".
  7. Now Ubuntu should establish a stable connection to your network.

What if the WLAN card is not recognized?

You may get a message that Ubuntu does not recognize your WLAN card. In this case, you are missing two packets. For the connection to the WLAN to work, you need to download and install wirelesstools as well as wpasupplicant. Following this, you will need to reconnect Ubuntu to your network.
