Mac OS X: Versions and Names at a Glance

The "X" in Mac OS X stands for the roman 10. Only behind it, in the decimal range, follows the respective version number. We show you which version number listens to which proper name.

Mac OS X has even changed its spelling over the years.

Creative proper names are nothing new in the software scene.

  • Mac OS 10.0: Cheetah (2001)
  • Mac OS 10.1: Puma (2001)
  • Mac OS 10.2: Jaguar (2002)
  • Mac OS 10.3: Panther (2003)
  • Mac OS 10.4: Tiger (2005)
  • Mac OS 10.5: Leopard (2007)
  • Mac OS 10.6: Snow Leopard (2009)
  • Mac OS 10.7: Lion (2011)
  • Mac OS 10.8: Mountain Lion (2012)
  • Mac OS 10.9: Mavericks (2013)
  • Mac OS 10.10: Yosemite (2014)
  • Mac OS 10.11: El Capitan (2015)
  • macOS 10.12: Sierra (2016)
  • macOS 10.13: High Sierra (2017)
  • macOS 10.14: Mojave (2018)
  • macOS 10.15: Catalina (2019)
  • macOS 11.0: Big Sur (2020)
Mit dem Release von Sierra hat Apple übrigens die offizielle Schreibweise geändert: Anstatt „Mac OS“ heißt es nun „macOS“. However, since the old spelling has been around for so long, it is still very common. This will probably only change in a few years, when the successor versions of Sierra have long been on the market, and also as macOS.
