What is a 7-Zip file? What you need to know about it

When you exchange files between computers, you can send them in a wide variety of formats. Multiple data can be packed into what is called a zip file. This compresses the files and allows them to be sent more quickly. One form of this format is represented by 7-Zip.

What is a 7-Zip file

If files are too large to send via e-mail or a chat program, for example, then it can be helpful to compress them. So-called packing programs can help with this. Usually, most operating systems already have a corresponding function. Also 7-Zip belongs to this type of software.

1. With 7-Zip it is a free data compression program.
2. If a file has the extension 7-Zip, then this was compressed with the program of the same name.
3. Before you can access the contents in the packed file, you must first unpack it.
4. Use macOSX or Windows, you can unpack the file via a corresponding option.
5. Under macOSX, select the zip file by double-clicking the left mouse button. Anschließend wird die Datei automatisch entpackt beziehungsweise es wird ein neuer gleichnamiger Ordner mit den entpackten Dateien erstellt.
6. Wählen Sie unter „Windows“ die gepackte Datei mit einem Rechtsklick aus. Im geöffneten Menü klicken Sie nun auf die Option „Alle extrahieren…“.
7. Anschließend können Sie den Ordner auswählen, in den die Dateien entpackt werden sollen.
8. Bestätigen Sie die Auswahl über die Schaltfläche „Extrahieren“.
