Microsoft Excel: What the "Roll" key does - all the info

In Excel, there are countless details that are hardly noticeable in everyday use. Among them is pressing the "scroll" key on your keyboard. Our guide explains what it does.

Two modes: "Scroll" lets you switch how the arrow keys work in Excel.

Excel's basic operation is not complicated. It is all the more surprising when a keystroke changes the mode.

Excel: Switch between two modes via "Rolls"

The "Rolls" key is located in the key block directly above the arrow keys. The latter are directly affected by pressing "Scroll", since their mode of operation is changed by it:
  • By default, you move from cell to cell with the arrow keys.
  • By "Scroll", however, this changes: Then the selection remains despite arrow key on the selected cell, instead of a movement you merely scroll in the view to the right, left, up or down.
Mostly users activate this mode accidentally and unconsciously. To return to the default mode, simply press "Scroll" again.
