If you would like a little variety in your chat history, then you can achieve this by completing various tasks in Steam. You will then receive random emoticons in your inventory for these tasks.

1. You can buy emoticons in the Steam Market if they have already been unlocked by other players and they want to sell the emoticon. The cost is between one and five cents.
2. To buy an emoticon, you must click on "Community" and then "Market". Once you have picked out a smiley, you simply select "Buy". The money is usually deducted from your Steam balance or via your preferred payment method.
3. Another option is to trade emoticons with players from your friends list, as long as they are willing to part with them.
