iPhone X: Replace display yourself - here's how

If the display of your iPhone X is damaged or defective, you can send it in to Apple for repair or try to replace the device's screen yourself. How you need to proceed to properly remove your old display, we explain here.

Swap it yourself: This is what iPhone X display repair costs

If the display of your iPhone X is defective, it is possible to have it repaired by Apple. However, if the manufacturer's warranty for the device has already expired, the repair will be expensive. While only a service fee of 29 Euros is charged for a display repair under an Apple Care contract, the repair without warranty costs around 311 Euros. If that is too expensive for you, your only option is to replace the display yourself.

How to replace the iPhone X display yourself

To do the display replacement yourself, you will need a suitable replacement display and appropriate tools. Also, be sure to turn off your iPhone X before you start the replacement.
  1. Now take a screwdriver and remove the pentalobe screws on the bottom of the case.
  2. Heat the edge of the display using a hot air dryer to loosen the adhesive and carefully lift the display. If you have difficulty loosening the display, use a plectrum to push the frame down.
  3. Then disconnect the battery by removing the Y-type screws and loosen the three connectors that connect the display.
  4. Also loosen the screws of the earpiece and remove the flex cable.
  5. Then take the new display and start to insert it by following steps 1 to 4 in reverse order.
