Excel: Frequency distribution - how to determine it
A frequency distribution is a mathematical function. This indicates how often the different values have occurred in a set of values. You can also create a frequency distribution in Excel. In addition, it is possible to subsequently build a descriptive diagram from it.
How to create a frequency distribution in Excel
If you want to create a frequency distribution of your data in Excel to make it easier to analyze the data, you first need to create a table. Then you need enough free cells in which the frequency count of each value is stored. It is also possible to determine limits in which the values should lie.- Open the worksheet containing the values whose frequency you want to determine.
- If you want to include interval limits, then write the individual values in a separate column in the table.
- To find out the frequency of the individual values, you need the "FREQUENCY()" function. This returns a vertical array of numbers as a result. For this reason, you must also enter the formula as a matrix formula.
- The function takes two arguments. The first argument corresponds to a matrix with reference to the set of values from which the frequency of the individual values is to be calculated.
- The second argument also refers to a matrix. For this one, you can specify the interval limits. If you leave this value blank, the number of the same elements within the set will be counted.
