Scrum: Definition of Ready - what does it mean?

Scrum is a program used in project management to plan projects better and more efficiently. This is to simplify the work in the team and you can work out your goals together. Thereby the software is divided into different areas to structure processes more effectively.

What is the "Definition of Ready" in Scrum?

While "Definition of Ready" is not an official term in Scrum, it plays an important role. This is to recognize whether the task has also been sufficiently formulated so that work can be done on it correctly. If this is not the case, then it must be further elaborated. For this, Bill Wake has developed a checklist with criteria for Scrum, which should improve the understanding of this.
  • Independent and immediately actionable: Are the product backlog items in the sprint independent of each other? This is to make them unprioritized and more estimable. Furthermore, this is to avoid unnecessary planning effort.
  • Negotiable: Are the PBIs negotiable? This is done against the background that so the details in the conversation should be better defined.
  • Valuable: Do the PBIs bring the customer added value? Behind this is the idea that only what the customer also wants should also be implemented.
  • Estimable: Are the PBIs estimable?
