Word: Recover lost document

While working, it is quite possible that an unexpected crash of the program or the computer will ruin the efforts of the last hours. It does not even necessarily matter whether you have saved the document before. To make sure that your work was not in vain, there are some recovery methods.

Word: Restore lost document - the Word backup file

If you have not enabled backup in Word so far, now is a good time to do so. By creating a backup file, lost files can be restored.
  1. Note that you will only find the following file with backup enabled.
  2. Open Word and click in the top left corner of the "File" entry.
  3. In the menu, you will find the "Recently used" option.
  4. Now you need to search for the backup file in the new window. If you have previously enabled backup, you have also specified a location, which you must now specify.
  5. If you no longer know the path, you can search the entire computer for a [.wbk] file.

Automatic restore

  1. In many cases, it happens that Word crashes unexpectedly, but the work was not saved before.
  2. The next time you open it, you will find a window on the left that displays an automatically saved version of the document.
  3. If the window does not appear automatically, switch again under "File" to "Recent" and click there on "Restore unsaved documents".
