An increasing number of e-scooters are being used in Germany. If you would also like to participate in road traffic with it, it is important to know all the rules first. As with any vehicle, there is an age and speed limit as to when you are allowed to drive an e-scooter.

It is only since the adoption of the regulation for small electric vehicles that it is allowed to participate in German road traffic with an e-scooter. For this, the various models require a general operating permit, which is usually already applied for by the manufacturers. Alternatively, you can also apply for an individual operating permit, but this is usually not worthwhile. In addition to the technical details of the vehicle, there are also requirements for the driver of the e-scooter.

1. Before you are allowed to drive the e-scooter, you must have reached a minimum age of 14 years, insofar as it complies with the maximum speed of 20 km / h. The e-scooter is not allowed to be driven on the road. Most vehicles with registration are already throttled to this speed.
2. By the limited speed, there is also no helmet obligation for the ride. However, wearing a helmet is useful, because it can come to serious accidents in traffic.
3. Also a separate driver's license you do not need for an e-scooter.
4. Should your vehicle go faster than specified in the regulation, other provisions apply. Here, the age may differ. In addition, a driver's license is then required, a helmet obligation also exists.
